Full-Cycle App Engineering for Every Platform

From a first release to a platform several versions deep, eight service lines cover the whole of a mobile product: the app itself, the backend behind it, the design that decides whether anyone stays, and the maintenance that keeps it in the stores.

Our Services

Designer reviewing iOS application screens
01 · Service line

iOS App Development

  • Native Swift and SwiftUI, built against the current SDK rather than a version behind
  • App Store review handled for you, including privacy labels and data-use disclosures
  • Support for the iPhone and iPad models your users actually carry, not only the newest
  • Platform features where they earn their place: widgets, Siri intents, App Clips, background refresh
Android application screens showing live tracking
02 · Service line

Android App Development

  • Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, tested on mid-range hardware and not only flagship devices
  • Play Console releases managed: staged rollouts, pre-launch reports, target API deadlines
  • Fragmentation handled deliberately, from screen density to OEM battery restrictions
  • Background work built to survive Doze and aggressive vendor task-killers
Illustration of an application launching across platforms
03 · Service line

Cross-Platform Development

  • Flutter or React Native chosen on your constraints, with the trade-off explained up front
  • One codebase for both stores, which usually halves the maintenance bill over a product's life
  • Native modules written where the framework genuinely cannot reach
  • A path back to native for any screen that later outgrows the shared layer
Product team reviewing application interface designs
04 · Service line

Mobile UI/UX Design

  • Journeys and wireframes agreed before any screen is built, so rework happens on paper
  • A component library your developers build from and your team can extend
  • Designs reviewed on real devices in real light, not only in a desktop mockup
  • Accessibility built in: tap targets, contrast, dynamic type and screen-reader labels
Cloud infrastructure management dashboard
05 · Service line

Backend, APIs & Cloud

  • The API layer designed alongside the app, not bolted on once the screens are done
  • Auth, roles and permissions modelled properly rather than patched in later
  • Infrastructure as code on AWS, Azure or GCP, so environments are reproducible
  • Integrations to the systems you already run, from payments to ERP and CRM
Engineering team planning an application migration
06 · Service line

App Modernisation & Migration

  • An honest audit first: what to keep, what to rewrite, and what is not worth saving
  • Incremental migration, so the product keeps shipping while the rewrite happens underneath
  • Legacy frameworks moved off before store deadlines force an emergency
  • Data migrated with a rollback plan, not a single irreversible cutover
Founder reviewing an early product build
07 · Service line

MVP Development

  • Scope cut to what actually tests the idea, with everything else written down for later
  • A build you can put in front of users in weeks rather than quarters
  • Analytics wired from the first release, so the next decision is evidence-led
  • A foundation that can carry version two instead of being thrown away
Monitoring dashboards for a live application
08 · Service line

Maintenance & Support

  • OS and SDK updates handled before they become forced migrations
  • Store policy changes tracked, so a rejection never arrives as a surprise
  • Crash, performance and API error monitoring with agreed response times
  • Continued feature work under a retainer, with a roadmap you control
Business Case

What Are the Benefits of Mobile App Development?

Building an app is a real investment, so it should buy something a responsive website cannot. Here is where a mobile product actually pays for itself.

A channel customers actually open

A mobile app sits on the home screen, not behind a bookmark. Push notifications reach people a marketing email will not, and session frequency is typically several times that of a mobile site.

  • Home-screen presence and push re-engagement
  • Faster repeat sessions than mobile web

Performance the web cannot match

Native rendering, on-device caching and background sync make an app feel instant even on a poor connection. That difference shows up directly in completion and abandonment rates.

  • Works on slow and intermittent connections
  • Offline-tolerant flows that queue and sync

Device capabilities you can build on

Camera, GPS, biometrics, Bluetooth and secure storage are available to an app and largely closed to a browser. Most products that need identity, location or payments end up needing them.

  • Biometric auth and secure key storage
  • Camera, GPS and Bluetooth access

Data you can act on

An app tells you what people actually do: where they stall, what they ignore, when they leave. That turns a roadmap argument into a measurement, which is usually the fastest way to stop building the wrong thing.

  • Event-level behaviour, not page views
  • Cohort and retention analysis built in

Production Apps, Not Just Prototypes

A demo that runs on one handset is not a product. Six disciplines take an app from idea to something that survives real users, real networks and the app stores, backed by our wider AI, API and cloud teams. Need only the design layer? See UI/UX design.

[1] Discovery & Product Strategy

Before anything is drawn we agree what the app has to achieve, who it is for, and what version one deliberately leaves out. Most overspend on mobile traces back to a scope nobody wrote down.

[2] Native & Cross-Platform Engineering

Swift and Kotlin where the product needs the platform, Flutter and React Native where one codebase serves both. The decision is made on your constraints and explained, not defaulted to whatever the team likes.

[3] Backend, APIs & Integrations

The services behind the app built alongside it, with auth, pagination and error handling agreed once. Connections to payments, ERP, CRM and messaging are treated as first-class work, not an afterthought.

[4] Offline-First & Performance

Real networks drop. We design for queueing and sync rather than treating loss of signal as an error state, and we budget install size and start-up time as features in their own right.

[5] Security & Compliance

Encryption, token handling, biometric unlock and server-side permission checks, plus the store privacy disclosures that now gate release. Designed in at architecture stage, not retrofitted.

[6] Release, Monitoring & Iteration

Staged rollouts, crash and performance monitoring, and analytics wired from the first build so the next decision is evidence-led rather than an opinion contest.

Why Appther

Why Partner With Appther for Mobile App Development?

Not the usual list. These are the things that change how a project actually goes, and what is worth asking any team you shortlist.

We scope before we quote

You get a written scope with the assumptions visible, so a change of mind is a conversation about trade-offs rather than an argument about the contract.

  • Assumptions written down, not implied
  • Change requests priced openly

One team, app to infrastructure

Mobile, backend, cloud and design sit together. There is no hand-off gap where the app developer blames the API team and nothing moves for a week.

  • No integration blame gap
  • One roadmap across the whole product

You own everything

Source in your repository from the first commit, your accounts, your infrastructure. Nothing is held hostage and any competent team can pick it up after us.

  • Your repo, your cloud accounts
  • Documented handover on request

We stay after launch

Most of a product's life happens after version one. OS updates, store policy changes, monitoring and continued feature work run under an agreed arrangement.

  • OS and SDK updates handled
  • Agreed response times on incidents
Security

How Does Appther Secure App Data?

Security is designed in at architecture stage. Retrofitting it after launch is where the expensive incidents come from, and app stores increasingly will not let you ship without it.

Data at rest and in transit

TLS everywhere, certificate pinning where the threat model justifies it, and platform keystores for anything sensitive on the handset. Secrets never ship inside the binary.

  • Keychain and Android Keystore
  • No credentials in the app bundle

Authentication and sessions

Token-based auth with refresh and revocation, biometric unlock where it helps, and sessions that actually expire. Roles and permissions are enforced server-side, never only in the UI.

  • Short-lived tokens with revocation
  • Server-side permission checks

The API surface

Every public endpoint validates input, rate limits, and returns errors that do not leak internals. The app is treated as an untrusted client, because on a rooted device it is one.

  • Input validation and rate limiting
  • Client treated as untrusted

Audit and compliance

Audit trails on anything touching money or personal data, data-retention rules agreed up front, and store privacy disclosures kept accurate as the product changes.

  • Audit trails on sensitive actions
  • Store privacy labels kept current
Technologies

The Stack Behind Our Apps

What we build with, and the reasoning behind each choice. Pick one to see where it earns its place in a mobile build.

Swift & SwiftUI

Apple's current stack. SwiftUI for new surfaces, UIKit where a screen needs control the declarative layer does not give, and Swift Concurrency so background work does not block the interface. Built against the current SDK, because Apple's deprecation window is shorter than most roadmaps assume.

Kotlin & Jetpack Compose

The modern Android path. Compose for UI, Coroutines and Flow for asynchronous work, and WorkManager for anything that has to survive the app being killed. Tested against Doze and vendor battery managers, which is where most Android background bugs actually live.

Flutter

One codebase compiled to native on both platforms, with pixel-identical UI. Strongest when the interface is custom and consistency matters more than platform convention, and when a small team needs to cover two stores without doubling the build.

React Native

Shared business logic with a JavaScript team, plus native modules where the framework cannot reach. A good fit when a web team already exists and the product needs to move quickly across both platforms.

Backend & APIs

Node.js, Python and FastAPI behind the app, with PostgreSQL or MongoDB underneath. Designed alongside the client rather than after it, so pagination, auth and error shapes are decided once instead of argued about in every sprint.

Cloud & DevOps

AWS, Azure or GCP as infrastructure as code, with CI that builds, signs and ships to both stores. Staged rollouts and crash monitoring wired before launch, not after the first bad release.

On-Device & Cloud AI

Core ML and TensorFlow Lite for work that must stay on the handset, and hosted models for anything heavier. Useful for document capture, recommendations and assistants, and covered in depth by our AI development practice.

Architecture

Mobile App Architecture, Layer by Layer

An app is ten layers that have to agree with each other. Get one wrong and the symptom usually surfaces somewhere else, which is why we design them together rather than in sequence.

Presentation

The screens themselves. Layout, navigation and state, built so a slow network changes what the user sees rather than freezing the interface.

01

State Management

One predictable source of truth per feature. Where this is vague, bugs stop being reproducible and every fix creates two more.

02

Domain Logic

Business rules kept out of the UI so they can be tested without a simulator, and reused if a second client ever appears.

03

Local Persistence

On-device storage and a sync strategy. Decides whether your app is usable in a lift, on a train, or on a rural connection.

04

API Client

Retries, timeouts, pagination and error shapes handled once, centrally, instead of being reinvented in each screen.

05

Backend Services

The services behind the app, sized for the traffic you expect rather than the traffic you have on launch day.

06

Identity & Access

Auth, tokens, roles and permissions, enforced on the server. The client is a convenience, never the gate.

07

Messaging & Push

Notification delivery, deep links and the routing that decides what opens when someone taps.

08

Infrastructure

Environments, CI, signing and staged rollout. Reproducible, so a release is boring rather than an event.

09

Observability

Crash reporting, performance traces and product analytics. Without this you are guessing about a product you cannot see.
