JoyScore: a calmer anxiety and sleep app for 500K+ active users

Appther redesigned and rebuilt JoyScore's iOS and Android app as version 8: feeling check-ins that suggest the right session, guided breathing, a 14-day stress plan, wind-down routines and calm streaks, all one tap from the home screen.

The brief

Help an anxious person feel calmer within a minute of opening the app

JoyScore has been on the App Store since 2019. Its promise is simple: anxiety relief, less stress and better sleep. For version 8, JoyScore asked Appther to rebuild the experience around that promise, so someone who opens the app on a bad night finds the right exercise straight away instead of browsing menus.

  • Find the right session fast. Ask how the person feels and suggest what helps, rather than showing a long library first.
  • Make breathing the core. Box breathing, 4-7-8 and short resets that work in one to five minutes.
  • Turn relief into a habit. A structured plan, gentle reminders and streaks that reward coming back.
  • Support sleep. Wind-down routines and soothing sounds for the moment people struggle most.
What we built

Four moments the app is designed around

Each screen has one job and one obvious next step, so the app stays calm even when the person using it is not.

Check in, and get the right session for this moment

A quick feeling check-in leads to a suggested session, with the library sorted into Sleep, Focus and Anxiety for anyone who wants to browse. Tonight's pick sits at the top, so there is always one clear place to start.

  • Feeling check-ins with a suggested session
  • Library filtered by Sleep, Focus and Anxiety
  • Short sessions from one minute upward

Guided breathing that works in minutes

Breathing is the heart of the app. A single expanding circle paces each breath, with sound and haptic cues so people can follow along with their eyes closed. Techniques include box breathing, 4-7-8 and the quick Instant Ease reset.

  • Box breathing, 4-7-8 and Instant Ease
  • Sound and haptic pacing
  • Session progress with a clear end

03

A 14-day plan that turns relief into a habit

Built from the person's answers, the plan asks for a few minutes a day. Day 7 unlocks a surprise and day 14 marks the finish, and calm streaks and progress tracking keep people coming back.

  • Personal 14-day stress plan
  • Calm streaks and daily reminders
  • Mood tracker across the week

Wind-down routines for better sleep

Evenings get their own path: bedtime routines, calming audio and sleep sounds such as rain on a tin roof or a low fan hum, so the app is as useful at midnight as it is at midday.

  • Wind-down routines and a bedtime ritual
  • Looping sleep sounds
  • Body scan and sleep sessions
How we worked

From an established app to version 8

  1. Review

We started from the live app and its store listing, looking for the points where a stressed user could get lost.

  2. Design

A calm design system: a colour per state of mind, large type, generous spacing and one primary action per screen.

  3. Build

One React Native codebase for iOS and Android, with a Python backend, OpenAI and AWS behind it.

  4. Release and iterate

Store submission on both platforms, then steady point releases. The app is on version 8.0.7 and still shipping.

JoyScore supports relaxation and general wellbeing. It is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice, and its store listings say so plainly.

FAQ

Building a mental wellness app

Can you redesign an existing app without losing its users?

Yes. JoyScore's version 8 shipped as an update to the same App Store and Google Play listings, so the update reached existing users through the listings they already had, and the app kept its ratings and reviews.

Do you build apps for iOS and Android at the same time?

Usually, yes. For JoyScore we used one React Native codebase for both platforms, which keeps features and releases in step and lowers the cost of every update.

Is a wellness app a medical device?

Not if it supports relaxation and general wellbeing and does not diagnose or treat conditions. JoyScore is positioned that way and says so in the app. Apps that make clinical claims need a different regulatory route, which we plan for from the start.

What does a mental wellness app cost to build?

It depends on content, features and platforms. Tell us what you have in mind and we'll send a written proposal with features, timeline and a fixed price. See our healthcare app development page for the kind of work involved.

Planning a wellness or health app?

Tell us what you want people to feel when they open it. We'll come back with a plan, a timeline and a fixed price.
