KO-BIRR: a digital wallet built for how Ethiopia pays
Instant P2P transfers in ETB, QR payments, and an agent cash-in and cash-out network from Addis Ababa's Merkato to every region, in 6 Ethiopian languages, designed and engineered end to end by Appther.
01 · The Challenge
Banking the unbanked, in a cash-first economy
Most Ethiopians are paid in cash, save in cash, and shop in cash. A wallet app only works if it meets people where they are: local languages, agents on every corner to convert cash to digital and back, and flows simple enough for a first-time smartphone user, whether they live in Addis Ababa or a rural kebele.
Of adults have no bank account
The wallet had to work without any bank link: cash in at an agent, spend digitally, cash out anywhere.
Languages spoken across Ethiopia
English-only fintech excludes most of the market. KO-BIRR launched in English, Amharic, Afaan Oromoo, Soomaali, Tigrinya, and Afar.
Networks in much of the country
Every flow was engineered for low bandwidth: tiny payloads, aggressive caching, and offline-tolerant cash-out codes.
Smartphone for many users
No dense dashboards. One action per screen, large tap targets, OTP that verifies itself, and a PIN pad familiar from feature phones.
THE BRIEF
Build a full mobile-money MVP: registration and KYC, P2P transfers, QR payments, agent cash-in and cash-out, money requests, and transaction history, in a premium design that earns trust at first glance.
02 · The Design
Premium dark, Ethiopian gold
Money apps compete on trust. We rejected the cartoon-bright look of most wallets for a considered dark interface with gold accents, the visual language of value, on a type system that stays legible in Amharic script.
Color
Near-black charcoal, gradient gold for primary actions, green reserved exclusively for money received
Type
Space Grotesk for numbers and balances, Manrope for UI, tested against Ge'ez script line heights
Components
56px buttons, 44px+ tap targets everywhere, pill badges for state, one primary action per screen
Motion
QR scan line, success pop, cash-out code glow, micro-interactions that confirm money moved
03 · The Product
Nine flows, one complete mobile-money MVP
Everything a first-generation wallet user needs, built by our mobile app development team, and nothing that gets in the way.
Instant P2P transfers
Send ETB to any KO-BIRR user with just a phone number. Recipient, amount, PIN, delivered in under 3 seconds, free.
QR pay & receive
A personal QR for receiving and a full-screen scanner with animated scan line for paying merchants and friends, no typing at all.
Agent network
Find nearby agents on a map, cash in over the counter, and cash out with a one-time code that works even when the agent's connection drops.
Tiered KYC
Start with just a phone number, unlock higher limits with a 3-step ID and selfie flow designed to pass National Bank of Ethiopia requirements.
Money requests
Request money from contacts with a note, approve or decline incoming requests, and settle with one tap and a PIN.
History & security
Searchable transaction history with receipts, Face ID and PIN authorization, and instant notifications for every birr in or out.
Agent Network
Agents turn cash into digital money, and back
In a cash-first economy the agent is the bank branch. KO-BIRR gives shopkeepers and pharmacies from Merkato to Bole a supervised way to take deposits and pay out withdrawals, with the ledger protecting both sides of every transaction.
Admin Panel
One console to run the whole network
Behind the app sits a web admin panel where the KO-BIRR operations team onboards agents, verifies KYC, monitors transactions, and manages the platform without touching a database.
04 · The Build
From SOW to store-ready MVP
The scope of work defined nine flows. We designed and validated every screen with Ethiopian test users before engineering began, so the build phase moved without rework.
Market research & flow mapping
Studied how Ethiopians actually move money: agent habits, trust signals, language needs. Mapped all nine flows and removed every unnecessary step, including the OTP submit button.
30+ screens, premium dark system
Full design system and every screen at production fidelity: splash, onboarding, registration, home, send, receive, scan, history, agents, cash-out, KYC, requests, and settings.
Wallet core, ledger & agent APIs
Double-entry ledger, idempotent transaction APIs, agent float management, OTP and PIN security, and localization infrastructure for six languages on low-bandwidth networks.
Testing with real users & agents
Usability rounds with first-time smartphone users, agent-side cash-out rehearsals, security review, and store submission for iOS and Android.

FAQ
Questions fintech founders ask us
How long does it take to build a digital wallet app?+
A full mobile-money MVP like KO-BIRR, covering onboarding, KYC, P2P, QR, agent cash-in and cash-out, and history, typically takes 4 to 6 months from scope of work to store submission, depending on integrations and regulatory review.
How do you handle multiple languages in one app?+
KO-BIRR shipped in six languages including Amharic and Tigrinya in Ge'ez script. We build localization into the design system from day one: every layout is tested against the longest translation, and scripts with different metrics get their own line-height rules.
How does agent cash-in and cash-out work?+
Users find a nearby agent on the in-app map, hand over cash to top up, or generate a one-time cash-out code the agent redeems. The ledger holds funds in escrow until the agent confirms, so neither side can lose money if a connection drops mid-transaction.
How is the wallet secured?+
PIN plus optional Face ID on every transaction, OTP-verified device binding, a double-entry ledger with idempotent APIs so no transaction can be duplicated, encrypted data at rest and in transit, and rate limiting against brute-force attempts.
Can you build fintech apps for other African markets?+
Yes. The patterns behind KO-BIRR (agent networks, low-bandwidth engineering, tiered KYC, local-language UX) apply across Africa, South Asia, and Latin America. We adapt the compliance layer to each central bank's requirements.
What does a project like this cost?+
It depends on scope: number of flows, integrations, and compliance requirements. Share your scope of work and we'll return a fixed-price USD proposal within 48 hours, the same process KO-BIRR started with.
